Profiles of several young girls in a rural village of southwestern China illustrate the obstacles they face in getting an education. Their parents, mostly poor and illiterate, often cannot afford to send their daughters to school in another village. Female teachers who can serve as role models are rare, and deeply ingrained cultural factors favor the education of sons over daughters-even if the sons are less talented.
