Three short independent films explore the experiences of Asian Americans. Sewing Woman is the story of one woman's journey from an arranged marriage in old China to life as a garment factory worker for more than 30 years. Zem Ping, the subject and also the filmmaker's mother, narrates the film in an intimate yet powerful voice, revealing the inner strength that helped her survive family separation and the hard life of a first-generation immigrant. Double Solitaire uses the motif of games to look at how the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II may have changed the lives of two ordinary people, the filmmaker's father and uncle. Norm and Stan were third-generation Americans who loved bowling, cards, pinball, sports, and following the stock market. But their experiences in the Amache internment camp, where they were placed as children, affected them in ways even they don't fully realize. Fighting Grandpa combines home movies, photographs, and interviews to illuminate a young filmmaker's search through the illusive and conflicted past of his grandfather, who emigrated from Korea to Hawaii in 1938. During conversations with members of his extended family, he uncovers the turmoil left in the wake of this one man.
