The Taste of Dirt

A short drama explores issues of race and class on the playground as experienced by African-American girls. It's 1970, and Lisa, a gifted 7-year-old black child, is having a hard time fitting in at an all-white school. Following an altercation, Lisa's mother decides to transfer her to the neighborhood school, which is predominantly black. But Lisa also has trouble fitting in there because of her speech patterns and mannerisms, which reflect those of privileged white girls, and her inability to jump double Dutch. She befriends Joanna, a fellow student ostracized because of her physical appearance, but the powerful lessons Lisa learned on the playground of her first school force her to make a difficult choice.
