Viewpoint Special—The Pilots of World War II

Looks at the second World War from the perspectives of those who fought it from the air. Retired Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets, who commanded the mission that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, recalls the mission and his later meeting with the Japanese commander of the attack on Pearl Harbor and talks about how history has treated the use of the atomic bomb. In a 1995 interview, three Tuskegee Airmen recall how mounting pressure from civil rights groups led to the establishment, in 1941, of a training facility for all-black fighter squadrons at the Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama. These pilots went on to fly more than 15,000 sorties over Europe and North Africa. Tuskegee Airmen Walter Kyle, Lewis Lynch, and Harold Sawyer share their stories of how they became air pioneers, including how one received the help of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
