Your Child with Special Needs:
From High School to Community
The transition from high school to the real world is a major step in everyones life, but it can be especially difficult for students who need extra support to be successful. What are some of the government programs available to support people with disabilities so they can live and work in the community? What is transition planning, and why is it important?
Representatives from the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, a Special Education Cooperative, the University Center on Disability at the University of Kentucky, and the parent of a child with special needs answer these questions and many other topics in this one-hour discussion on what it means for students with disabilities to make the transition from school to the communitya change in service delivery systems from entitlement (the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) to eligibility (Medicaid or another social service agency). Documentary segments show adults with disabilities at a variety of jobs, working independently and with job coaches, and in a variety of living and recreational settings to show some of the options available.
