Street Skills goes beyond the basic "how-to's" to
give its audience a deeper understanding of the physics, mechanics and psychology of driving.
The message is clear, "Driving can be fun. Driving can be freedom. Driving can be fatal."
In fact, statistics show that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause
of death for teens between 15 and 19 years old. (National Center for Health Statistics)
We realize that just telling teens to be more responsible is not enough," says Whitaker.
"In an effort to sensitize teens, we use unscripted interviews with accident victims
and graphic video of accident scenes."
While some scenes may be difficult to watch, the series itself is quite
different from early driver education films. Street Skills
uses contemporary music, fast edits, MTV-style videography and computer-generated
animation to appeal to its teenage audience.
The series is hosted by actor and Kentucky native
Josh Hopkins, who can be seen in the upcoming movie
G.I. Jane with Demi Moore and will star in the fall season of Fox's
"New York Undercover."
Street Skills is a
KET production, produced and directed by Janet Whitaker.
Liz Hobson serves as executive producer.
The series is closed-captioned for the deaf, and hard-of-hearing.
