Safety on the Belle - Part 1 of 5
In the Beginning
Boats of the 1800s were not constructed with safety as the primary concern. Because of that, many steamboats had very short lives. People also lost their lives when boilers exploded or boats caught on fire. In that era boats didn’t carry life rafts and jackets. Today, however, all passenger boats, including the Belle, are very concerned about safety and have many features to protect the passengers, crew members, and the boat itself.
