  21. The tree leaves slow rain falling so that it has time to soak into the forest floor. The forest floor is made up of rotted leaves and wood, which act as a sponge to soak up water and slow it down even more so it can naturally be filtered by the soil and microorganisms. Logs on the forest floor can also act as natural dams to slow water down.
  22. First, seedlings of pioneer trees like cedar or pine start growing. As they grow, they shade and crowd out grasses and help the growth of other kinds of tree seedlings that couldn’t grow in bright sun or compete with grass. These new species of trees grow and shade out the pioneer species, and this process continues until climax species are the main ones left growing in the mature forest.
  23. An animal’s home area where it gets what it needs to survive. These needs, in general, are food, water, shelter, and space.
  24. Native Americans were the first forest managers. They burned the forest to create clear areas where animals could graze and where they could build their homes and travel through the wooded areas. They also selectively burned so that certain types of beneficial trees (like chestnuts) and plants (such as berries) would grow more. They cut trees to use the wood to make the things they needed every day.
  25. All life on Earth, including humans, is part of the same complicated ecological system. The different parts of the system depend on one another. When one part of the system is removed, it affects the other parts. When too many parts are removed, the system gets out of balance and breaks down.
