Tomahawk Practice
A tomahawk is a small axe originally used by Native Americans. Settlers adopted it because of its versatility: It could be used to chop or whittle wood, as a metal striker used with flint to start a fire, or as a weapon for hand-to-hand combat or throwing. It was also more portable than other traditional weapons. By the end of the 1600s, frontier militia infantrymen began carrying them instead of swords.
The photos show settlers practicing throwing tomahawks to be prepared in case they need to use them in a fight.
