Fort Boonesborough Blacksmith
Blacksmiths make metal such as iron and steel into useful objects like knives, tomahawks, cooking utensils, wagon wheel rims, horseshoes, etc. The work is hot, difficult, and dangerous, and an experienced blacksmith might have one or more apprentices—young men learning this specialized trade by working their way up from chores around the shop to the more skilled shaping tasks.
The blacksmith’s shop, sometimes called a smithy, would include a fire pit with a bellows for heating the metal, plus an anvil and a variety of hammers, tongs, swage blocks, and other tools to handle and shape the metal.
