Fort Boonesborough Spinner

A spinner turns natural fibers such as wool, animal hair, flax, or other plant fibers into thread or yarn, which a weaver will then use to make cloth.

The first step is to clean and straighten the fibers. Then the spinner uses a device called a spinning wheel to twist the fibers very tightly into a long strand of either thread or yarn. The thread or yarn is then wound on a reel (or “weasel”) to make a loose, long coil called a skein.

After making the thread or yarn, the spinner would sometimes dye it using natural materials such as walnut hulls or berries.
