Fort Boonesborough Weaver

A weaver makes cloth out of thread or yarn (see the spinner page for more about thread/yarn production) using a device called a loom. These photos from Fort Boonesborough show a barn-frame loom. The weaver strings “warp” threads through the loom mechanism and attaches them at both ends. This process is called “warping the loom.” Then she works the loom, using both hands and feet to move the loom parts. She slides a shuttle attached to “weft” threads across and through the warp threads to weave the piece of fabric.
