Fort Harrod Basketmaker
Settlers used baskets of various shapes and sizes for transporting and storing food and goods. Large, strong baskets might be used for carrying dirt or vegetables from the garden, while smaller, more delicate baskets could be used to gather eggs or store yarn.
Baskets were made of a variety of materials: the wood or inner bark of oak, ash, willow, hickory, or other kinds of trees, split into thin strips, or vines or brambles like blackberry or raspberry canes. All members of the family, including the children, would have been involved in gathering the raw materials to make the baskets. Children also were taught how to weave baskets themselves.
