Fort Harrod Blockhouse
A blockhouse is a strong two-story building with the upper story jutting out over the lower one. This arrangement makes it easier to watch for enemies and fire weapons and harder for enemies to climb the walls. The windows had heavy wooden shutters with loopholes. These photos show settlers defending the blockhouse by firing their long rifles through the loopholes.
Blockhouses were sometimes built as stand-alone fortifications for small villages of settlers called stations.
