So You Wanna Be in Showbiz?
Here’s a writing assignment that just might get you started. Pick a position from the list of (fictional) job postings below, or another position from our careers page, and write a letter or e-mail of inquiry in which you respond to an ad and initiate a dialogue about possible employment. Begin with a paragraph introducing yourself and expressing an interest in the position you’ve selected. In the body of the letter, state some of your qualifications. If you have not had theater experience, have you had other work experiences that are related? Include questions, if you feel they’re appropriate.
Finally, make a closing statement. Would you be willing to relocate? To work full or part time? To volunteer? Re-read your letter carefully, making sure you’ve been concise, accurate, and upbeat. If possible, exchange letters with a friend for editing and proofreading.

- Charleston Stage seeks an individual experienced in nonprofit fund-raising to oversee the annual fund-raising campaign for the company. Experience in corporate, individual, and event fund-raising, board relations required.
- Running crew (wardrobe, follow spot operators, stage crew) hired on a per-show basis and paid a weekly salary. Technical rehearsals (approx. two weeks) require a full-time, daily commitment. Some experience required—as well as enthusiasm, intelligence, reliability, and punctuality.
- Center Stage seeks Assistant Company Manager for fall season. Main responsibilities are managing artist and intern apartment buildings and housing visiting artists with grace and enthusiasm. Other duties include coordinating travel for visiting artists, coordinating Volunteer Artist Hospitality Team, supervising intern, updating and maintaining departmental budget and artist databases, generally assisting Company Manager with local casting and contracts.
- Experienced individual sought to work as member of a team of four carpenters in state-of-the-art scene shop. Pamela Sisler (front) is properties manager at Horse Cave Theatre. Her husband, Peter (right), is assistant technical director. James, their son, is a master carpenter for the theater. Daughter Laurel is equity stage manager. In addition, the Sislers’ 10-year-old daughter Rose acted in Our Town, and sons Thomas and Patrick are theater ushers.
