This is an Asian elephant. It is smaller than its cousin the African elephant. It is easy to tell the two apart because the Asian elephant has much smaller ears. The Asian elephant is found in Asia, India, Pakistan, Ceylon, Burma, Indo-China, Malaya, Sumatra, and Borneo.

The Asian elephant is an endangered species due to destruction of their habitat. Existing populations are restricted in isolated habitats. Elephants were once slaughtered for their hide and ivory tusks. Population has now increased under government protection.
