Details
Episode description: In the mid-19th century, Russians experienced a renaissance and reformation through literature. Among literary giants such as Dostoevsky, Pushkin, and Tolstoy, the playwright Gogol saw the hollow heart behind the facade of St. Petersburg's palaces. Drawing on the masks and legends of the Ukrainian popular theater of his childhood, Gogol satirically depicted his contemporary world of bureaucrats and pompous minor officials. [cc]
