Details
Episode description: The Declaration of Independence states that "all men are created equal," but the nation's slaves are a glaring exception. The colonial slave trade and the brutality of life for African Americans on Southern plantations spark the abolition movement and the Underground Railroad. Ex-slave Frederick Douglass becomes a powerful spokesman for abolition, and Abraham Lincoln's debates with Stephen Douglas reflect the division over slavery's westward expansion. When Lincoln is elected to the presidency, several Southern states secede from the union. [cc]
