Episode description: Actor, playwright, director, choreographer, clown—the remarkable Bill Irwin defies categorization. In the 25 years since he began clowning around with San Francisco's famed Pickle Family Circus, his comic antics and physical feats have been seen in a Lincoln Center production of Waiting for Godot with Robin Williams and Steve Martin; Hollywood blockbusters like Robert Altman's Popeye; and original Broadway productions like Fool Moon, The Regard of Flight, and Largely/New York. This look at Irwin's life, work, and influences features an updated production of Regard; the world premiere of The Harlequin Studies, Irwin's take on the lewd and lazy rogue of commedia dell'arte; and Mr. Fox: A Rumination, the story of the rise and fall of George Fox, America's first celebrity clown.
