Episode description: Equal parts federal prison, treatment center, farm, and research laboratory, the Narcotic Farm was designed to rehabilitate addicts while helping researchers discover a cure for drug addiction. Built on a campus of rolling hills just outside Lexington in 1935 (now the site of a federal prison), this bold and ambitious public works project was shut down 40 years later amid scandal over its drug-testing program.
