Details
Episode description: From the late 19th century until the civil rights movement, black residents of Cartersville, GA (near Atlanta) lived exclusively in the Summer Hill section of town. Despite poverty, racism, and limited opportunity, this tight-knit community and its segregated school flourished for four generations. Summer Hill produced Georgia's first black Supreme Court justice; a famous Motown songwriter; and teachers, ministers, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals. [cc]
