Red-bellied woodpeckers have a red spot on their bellies and a very red head. They like nuts and insects.  They are about nine inches long.A  red-bellied woodpecker has black and white stripes on its back. They do not fly south during the winter months. They stay in their homes. Be sure to leave some nuts and seeds out for them.

Cardinals don’t migrate south during the winter. If you keep seed in your feeder, you can watch them all year long. They are about nine inches long. Cardinals eat insects and seeds. They live in forests and the trees around your yard.

Goldfinches like being around other goldfinches. That means they are sociable. Goldfinches can sing while they fly. Talk about multitasking! Goldfinches are about five inches long. They like living in trees near open fields. No forests for them. Goldfinches just eat seeds. They don’t like insects.

Hairy woodpeckers love dead trees. They make their homes in them. They use thier pointed beaks to carve out a hole in the trunk and live inside. Hairy woodpeckers are seven to nine inches long. They live in places where there are lots of older trees. Insects are their favorite food, but they love seeds and suet too.
Blue jays are one of the most colorful birds you see at a feeder. They like to eat alone. They can sound like a falcon to scare away other birds. Blue jays are nine to 11 inches long.  Did you know blue jays aren’t really blue? They’re brownish gray. They look blue when the sun shines on them.
