Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to submit stories and poems for the 2019 KET Young Writers Contest. The contest, which runs through April 15, encourages students in KET’s viewing area to celebrate the power of crafting stories, poems and illustrations by submitting their own, original work.
Students in kindergarten through 3rd grade are invited to submit entries to KET’s Young Writers Illustrated Story Contest. Students in 4th and 5th grades are invited to submit entries to KET’s Young Writers Short Story Contest. (Submissions to the Illustrated Story Contest or Short Story Contest may be in the form of fact, fiction, prose or poetry.)
Students in 6th through 12th grade are invited to submit entries for KET’s Young Writers Poetry Contest. This year’s contest allows high school students to participate for the first time. (Previously, only K-8th grade divisions were offered.)
To enter, students must submit original, single-author work. Only one entry per child is permitted. Illustrated story entries must include at least five original illustrations. Illustrated entries from kindergarten and 1st graders must include between 50-200 words; illustrated entries from 2nd-3rd graders must include between 100-300 words. Entries to the short story contest for 4th and 5th graders must have between 400-800 words. Entries to the poetry contest for 6th through 12th grade students should have between 25-250 words.
Entries must be submitted or postmarked by April 15, 2019, to be eligible. Complete rules and contest entry forms are available at KET.org/writerscontest.
KET will select first-, second-, and third-place winners as well as up to 10 finalists for each grade levels in grades K-8. High school entries (grades 9-12) will be competing as a single group, broken into two divisions: Form Poetry and Free Verse Poetry. First-, second-, and third-place winners and finalists will be named in each of the high school poetry divisions. The top three entries in grades K-8, as well as in the high school poetry divisions, will be published online on KET.org/writerscontest. Winners will be notified no later than May 30.
