The U.S. Department of Education’s Ready To Learn Programming has funded, for over two decades, the development of educational television and digital media targeted at preschool and early elementary school children and their families, especially those who live in low-income communities. Under this federal grant, CPB and PBS KIDS work with producers, researchers, local public media stations such as KET, and other partners to develop, distribute and evaluate PBS KIDS multi-platform content – including television programs, video, interactive games, mobile apps and hands-on activities – to engage children, families, and educators in learning experiences at home, in preschool, and in out-of-school settings.
The KET Early Childhood Education (ECE) team supports the CPB-PBS Ready To Learn 2020-2025 Initiative. In this grant cycle, the Ready To Learn grant is focused on working with early learning experts to create experiences that expose young children to career and workforce options and help them to build vital functional literacy, critical thinking, collaboration, and “world of work” skills and knowledge.
This grant provides many different opportunities to support children and their families including:
- Family and Community Learning – workshops designed not only to build children’s computational thinking, the world of work and informational text literacy skills, but also to boost the confidence of their parents and caregivers, and help them realize they can support and be a part of their child’s learning experience
- Educator Professional Development –guided facilitator trainings for camps and workshops, Playful Learning for Educators, and providing many online resources for additional development opportunities

Taking family engagement to the next level! Family and Community Learning (FCL) workshops support parents and caregivers as they support their children. The PBS KIDS ScratchJr FCL encourages persistence and a flexible mindset as families imagine, plan and create through communication and collaboration.

The Ready To Learn initiative is a cooperative agreement of the U.S. Department of Education, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), and PBS. PBS member public television stations nationwide are important partners in the Ready To Learn initiative.
