Go on a Length Hunt
Before kids learn to use standard tools, such as a ruler, it’s helpful to introduce them to non-standard measuring tools. These can be anything from their own feet to a length of string. You can measure with anything as long as you use the same unit of measure.

1st-2nd Grade

Investigating the Temperatures in Your Home
There is a wide range of temperatures on earth — from desert hot to arctic cold. Go on a temperature scavenger hunt with your child to discover the many ways you measure temperatures inside and outside your house.

Sharpen Measuring Skills by Playing Jump, Jump, Measure!
Jump as far as you can and then measure the distance using informal measurement tools.

1st-2nd Grade

Make Mystery Footprints
Detectives often look for clues, like footprints, to help them solve a case. Using the sole of a shoe as the “stamp” and the paint as the “ink,” create a trail of footprints to examine together.

Measuring: How Many Steps, Hops, Jumps Does it Take?
Use nonstandard measuring units – steps, hops or jumps – to determine the distance from object A to object B.

1st-2nd Grade

Make and Measure a Blob
Follow a simple recipe with your child to make a gooey blob at home. Then divide the blob into smaller pieces and play a game of hide-and-seek for an equal amount of measurement and fun!

The dinos are hungry! In this game, kids can add food to the scale until it’s balanced. Once it’s right, watch them chow down!

1st-2nd Grade

Use Math While Baking Peg’s Honey Cake
Peg and her friends find math all around them, including in the kitchen. As you bake and decorate a delicious honey cake, look for all the ways you use math — from measuring the ingredients, to setting the oven temperature and timer, to decorating the cake with geometric patterns.
