KET creates educational materials to complement new film about the history of Frontier Nursing Service

For Release: 10/13/21 1:07 PM

KET’s new documentary, Angels on Horseback: Midwives in the Mountains, recounts the remarkable story of the women of the Frontier Nursing Service who established professional midwifery in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky in the 1920s.

To accompany the documentary, KET has created supplementary videos and educational classroom materials for grades 6-12 that explore some of the historical topics—such as maternity care, the Great Depression in Eastern Kentucky, and the role of horses as a means of transportation in the early 20th century—mentioned in the film.

The free videos and educational materials, housed on PBS LearningMedia, may be viewed at: KET.pbslearningmedia.org/collection/Angels-on-Horseback-Midwives-Mountains
