Social change flowed along the Erie Canal as steadily as commerce. Farming families and pioneers who lived along the canal turned to their faith; or committed to new religions, interpretations of established religions and new forms of high energy spirituality fueling a culture along the canal route that became known as the “Burned Over District.”
