For more than 17 years, Robert E. Harrill, better known as the Fort Fisher Hermit, lived under the stars and off the land, sustaining himself with contributions from visitors to his coastal North Carolina haunts. Product of a tumultuous upbringing, he eventually died a suspicious death.
