Northern New Jersey's forested Highlands region, one of the state's most expansive wooded areas, supplies water for more than four million people in the urban corridor encompassing Newark and Jersey City. Yet forest preservation measures begun a century ago have slowly been forgotten, and this wilderness region and its natural resources are once again threatened by highways and development.
