On February 19, 1945, thousands of U.S. Marines landed on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima, entering one of the deadliest battles of modern warfare. Nearly half were wounded or killed, and all but a thousand of the Japanese defenders died in the battle. Fifty years later, survivors from both sides of the conflict returned to the island to honor their shared past. This powerful, lyrical documentary of their encounter uses archival images and interviews to reveal how their experiences forever changed the young men themselves and helped bring the war to an end.
