Hemplands

Lexington filmmaker Patrick McNeese traces the history of hemp in Kentucky and around the world, from its use by prehistoric humans as a source of food and clothing to its 18th- and 19th-century heyday as a cash crop to its 1960s counterculture associations. Though its production is now banned in America because of its biological kinship to the marijuana plant, hemp is also seen by many as an environmentally friendly solution to several natural-resource problems and a valuable potential crop for farmers looking for an alternative to tobacco. Historian Dr. Thomas Clark, writer Ken Kesey, and lawyer and political agitator Gatewood Galbraith offer commentary.
