On October 10, 1901, an unknown mechanic with no racing experience challenged Alexander Winton, the leading automaker and race car driver of the day, to a 10-lap race at the Detroit Driving Club. Winton was widely favored to defeat his unlikely challenger-a young man named Henry Ford. But Ford's surprising upset of Winton attracted investors, launched Ford's business ventures, and marked the beginning of the industry that put America on wheels. Dramatic re-creations of the 1901 race, along with rare historical footage and interviews with leading auto experts, historians, and authors, tell a story of homegrown ingenuity and persistence.
