Ely S. Parker, a 19th-century Seneca Indian, defied racial barriers to rise in power in both the white and Native American worlds. He was a Seneca chief, a federal engineer, a Civil War secretary to Ulysses S. Grant, and the first Native American to be commissioner of Indian affairs. But his successes were tainted with controversy, and his quest for the American dream eventually turned tragic.
