Horowitz: A Reminiscence

From his 1920 recital debut in Russia to his death in 1989, Vladimir Horowitz was one of the 20th century's most famous pianists. His performances and recordings of works by Rachmaninoff and Tchaikosvky are still legendary, but there is more to his story than his musicianship. Despite all the accolades he received from audiences, critics, and political figures around the world, he suffered from anxiety that often led him to withdraw from public life for extended periods of time. But he overcame all of that with a triumphant series of 1986 concerts in Russia that were hailed as major events, both musically and politically. This documentary won an Emmy for Outstanding Cultural Program in 1994, when it first aired.
