Shadow Play

This program looks at Indonesia's year of living dangerously. On the night of September 30, 1965, six of Indonesia's senior generals were kidnapped and murdered. The shocking massacre set in motion a national power struggle that led to the overthrow of President Sukarno by General Suharto, initiating a reign of terror in which a million or more Indonesians were killed. Through recently declassified documents, interviews with newly liberated Indonesians, and discussions with officials, journalists and survivors of prison and torture, this program offers a startling new interpretation of the events that shaped modern Indonesian history and changed the destiny of Southeast Asia. Actress Linda Hunt narrates.
