The Channel Islands at War

Explore the history of England's Channel Islands with an unexpected host: John Nettles, an accomplished actor (Midsomer Murders, Bergerac) and, unbeknownst to many, an amateur historian. Spending 10 years living and working in the Jersey island area during the filming of the Bergerac series, he became fascinated by the area's wartime past. THE CHANNEL ISLANDS AT WAR, written and hosted by Nettles, is an emotional three-part mini-series that examines the German invasion and occupation of Britain's Channel Islands and the lasting legacy it left on the area. From June 1940, when the Nazis arrived, until May 1945, the inhabitants of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark lived through five years of oppression, terror, collaboration and near starvation that's left an indelible scar still evident 70 years later. The series dives into Britain's decision to abandon the Islanders after Hitler seized the territory and explores the crippling impact of later being cut off from the rest of Europe. It also investigates the continuing speculation and secrecy surrounding the islanders' purported collaboration with the Germans. Most of all, the series pays tribute to the people of that time, ordinary people who trod a perilous path through an epic conflict, and assesses how their lives paved the way
