STLP Students Shadow News Quiz Host Kelsey Starks

News Quiz viewers see Kelsey Starks on screen once a week as she introduces current events and poses challenge questions. Recently, however, some aspiring young reporters got to meet her in person and learn about television production.

Sixteen students shadowed Starks as she and the KET crew were on hand for the Student Technology Leadership Program State Championships. The event was held April 18 at Lexington’s Rupp Arena.

The students came from elementary and middle schools in Boone, Bullitt, Campbell, Fayette, Floyd, Greenup, Jefferson, Jessamine, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Monroe, and Warren counties. They were selected through an interview/application process at the regional STLP events in the fall.

KET live streamed award events throughout all day and aired the final award show that evening. The students were excited to learn the ropes from Starks, whose career in broadcasting includes work on a morning TV news show in Louisville. And Starks enjoyed meeting the students, who also got the chance to operate video cameras and shoot photos.

The event, which encourages students to solve school and community needs using technology, was a perfect match for the students and Starks.

In addition, Starks was able to meet and talk to lots of other excited News Quiz fans at the KET booth. She showed them how green screen technology works and posed for photos with them.
