America became what it is today in so many ways because of the Erie Canal. Perhaps the song “Low Bridge” comes to mind when we say the canal’s name. The Erie Canal was one of the largest canals in the world, dug in largely unsettled territory across upstate New York. The Erie became The Canal That Made America by giving the new nation a way to grow.
