Poverty In Stockton

The mayor of Stockton, California is using novel programs to turn the city's economic woes around.

Drought Grips The Rio Grande

The Rio Grand River is an important source of water for citizens of both the United States and Mexico, with millions of people depending on the waterway for drinking supplies and agriculture as it weaves its way across the shared border between the two countries. But climate change is having a deep impact on the Rio Grande, even as more people move to the region. The area surrounding the the Rio Grande is experiencing longer lasting droughts, with some estimates predicting that the river will run out of water by 2060. Zo? Schangler, an environmental reporter with Quartz, worked on a nine-part series with the Texas Observer that explores issues of border water and climate change. NewsHour Weekend's Hari Sreenivasan recently spoke to Schangler about the challenges facing the Rio Grande.

Diversity in Tennis

It has been 50 years since Arthur Ashe became the first African-American tennis player to win a Grand Slam title. Of the last 364 Grand Slam tennis matches played since 1924, only four have been won by an American minority. Michael Chang was the last non-white American to appear in a Grand Slam final in 1996. And while the list of American men's tennis players who have held the top spot has remained a nearly all-white affair, American men as a whole have struggled to be successful in professional tennis, too, having gone more than a decade without securing a Grand Slam appearance. But in recent years, the United States Tennis Association in conjunction with National Junior Tennis and Learning have been working to expand the game and trying to bring African-Americans and Latinos to the court. NewsHour Weekend's Christopher Booker reports.

Rapid-Response Collecting

Some museums are recording history by gathering objects and artifacts from events as they are happening.

Florida's Forgotten Coast

Residents continue to live in makeshift shelters after Hurricane Michael struck last month.

ISIS in Iraq

Islamic State fighters have risen again in four of Iraq's provinces: Kirkuk, Salahuddin, Diyala, and Sulaimania. Iraqi troops there have been participating in a new kind of fight, as they search out pockets of ISIS fighters who escaped the battlefields and have returned to their insurgent roots.

ISIS in Libya

Libyan security forces say members of ISIS continue to work with migrant traffickers along the coast, ferrying people from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe.

Isis in Libya

With Libya in turmoil, some fear the militant group may exploit a power vacuum. ISIS has regrouped in the surrounding desert, launching a series of deadly attacks last year.

Salton Sea

California's largest lake has become a portrait of abandonment, but artists are converting lands around the Salton Sea to allow painters, sculptors, and others to do battle with the sand, the sun, and the wind.

Storied Ocean

An aquarium in California is looking at elements of today's marine life to create blueprints of the ocean's ecological past.

Musical Desert Arena

Musicians at the Moab Music Festival in Utah have performed stunning concerts with rich acoustics, towering sandstone, and ethereal desert landscapes for more than 25 years.
